Telegraph: Tottenham sues Inex for more than 11 million pounds, Inex counterclaims for more than 1 million
August 21 The Telegraph reported that Ineos counterclaiming Tottenham for more than one million pounds due to Audi sponsorship negotiations. Tottenham is suing Inelis Automobile Limited for claiming more than £11 million, accusing it of violating a five-year minimum of £17.5 million contract signed in 2022. Under the contract, Tottenham will promote Inex's Grenadier as its "official four-wheel drive vehicle partner." However, Tottenham terminated its contract on March 11 and filed a lawsuit in June, claiming that Inelis failed to pay more than £5 million in annual installments due on December 1 and had not previously paid nearly £500,000 in inflation-related payments. According to the "claim details" filed by Tottenham, the club also requested at least £5275,974 in compensation, as the contract will be more than two years before it expires. Last week, Inelis filed a defense and counterclaim statement in the High Court: "There is no mention of a series of major events in the details of the claim that the club began negotiations with Inelis' main competitor without Inelis's knowledge, in an attempt to grant the competitor the exclusive rights of Inelis in the agreement." The statement added: "About August 3, 2023 (i.e. the early stages of the second year of the contract), the club's Todd Kline told Inelis' Ashley Reed. , the club has discussed and/or negotiated with German automaker Audi on rights that are the same or substantially similar to Inelis's rights in the agreement. According to Klein, these discussions and/or negotiations are related to club player Harry Kane's transfer to Bayern Munich club in Germany. "Inelis' defense further pointed out that although this business cooperation was not finally achieved, "this series of events ultimately led to the agreement between the parties agreeing that Inelis can terminate the agreement at the end of the third year of the contract." The statement also added: "In this case, the club owes Inex more than £1 million because the club failed to provide any rights to Inex in the final stage of the third year of the contract." The details of Tottenham's claim list the details of the contract, which includes payment of £2.125 million per year in the first year and increased year by year to £4.6 million in the fifth year, all payments are subject to VAT and index adjustments based on inflation. Tottenham also claimed they were entitled to interest and other reliefs the court deemed appropriate. A spokesperson for Inelis said: "Inelis has been a partner of Tottenham since 2022, expanding its partnership with the club since 2020. We have the contractual right to terminate our partnership and exercise that right in December 2024." When news of the legal action first came out in December, Ratcliff's company told the Daily Telegraph Sports Edition: "Like any business, we must operate and invest in marketing budgets with caution. It is completely normal to review the partnership regularly, and we decided that this partnership does not work for us. We have the right to terminate the partnership." The claim for Tottenham was filed less than a month after they beat Ratcliffe's Manchester United in the UEFA Cup final. The partnership between Tottenham and Ineos began with the petrochemical company being named the club's "official hand disinfectant supplier" during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Ineos has been cutting ties with several major sports organizations in recent months, including Ben Ironsley's sailing team and All Blacks rugby team. The Daily Telegraph sports edition revealed in February that the New Zealand Rugby Association also filed a lawsuit against Inex, accusing it of breach of contract, despite an agreement later reached. Inex said companies were forced to cut costs due to the "extreme" green carbon tax in Europe and warned that this could lead to "de-industrialization" in the mainland. Earlier this year, Ratcliff also blamed energy prices and carbon taxes on forcing Ineos to close its synthetic ethanol plant in Grangemus, Scotland, resulting in direct loss of 80 jobs and an estimated 500 indirect jobs. Since Ratcliff bought a 27.7% minority stake in Manchester United in December 2023, Manchester United has implemented several major financial measures, including raising fares and laying off hundreds of employees. When announcing the Grenadier agreement in 2022, Tottenham Hotspur said: "Our cooperation with Ineos Grenadier represents a combination of an innovative British brand with an iconic London football club, both committed to pushing boundaries and daring to be different while maintaining authentic values and traditions."
