The Real Madrid coach was born in Tolosa (Gipuzcoa Province) on November 25, 1981 and is currently in his first season in charge of the first team. During his playing career, he made 236 appearances for the club between 2009 and 2014. During this period, he won 6 trophies: Lisbon's 10th Champions League title, 1 European Super Cup, 1 La Liga title, 2 Copa del Reys and 1 Spanish Super Cup.

As a coach, Alonso's career began in the Real Madrid youth training system. He coached the U13 echelon in the 2018-2019 season. He then moved to the Real Sociedad B team to coach for three seasons and took over as head coach of Bayer Leverkusen in the 2022-23 season. He coached in Germany for three seasons, during which time he won the Bundesliga, German Cup and German Super Cup. In the summer of 2025, he returned to Real Madrid as the head coach of the first team.
