Djokovic won in Greece, missed the ATP Finals
With his 72nd title on hard court on the ATP Tour, Djokovic surpassed Roger Federer to become the player with the most championships on this surface in the Open Era. At the age of 38, Nole is also the oldest male player to win a championship on the ATP Tour, since this system was introduced in 1990. The three-hour final match saw five times the two players lost their service games in the deciding set. "An unbelievable battle, three hours of extreme physical strength, " Djokovic said after the victory. "This match could have gone to anyone, so congratulations to Lorenzo for a great performance. I'm very proud of myself for overcoming this challenge ". Before the match, Musetti needed to win the championship to overcome Felix Auger-Aliassime and take the final spot at the ATP Finals. He played a fair match with Nole and only gave up after losing the final service game, in the deciding set. Djokovic, with his 9th win in 10 meetings with Musetti, was crowned in a tournament headed by his younger brother, Djordje. For Musetti, this was still a big disappointment when he lost in the sixth consecutive ATP final. The Italian tennis player won his first two ATP titles in 2022 in Hamburg and Naples, but has not won any more cups since then. After the match, the two players smiled and exchanged words at the net. Although he did not win the final, Musetti's efforts were still rewarded when Djokovic withdrew from the ATP Finals on the same evening. Musetti reportedly knew this as soon as the two players shook hands after the final. He will replace Nole to appear for the first time in the tournament for the eight best players of the year. "I was looking forward to competing in Turin and giving my best, but after the final in Athens today, I am sad to announce that I was forced to withdraw due to a shoulder injury, " Djokovic wrote on social networks, a few hours after the final. "I'm really sorry to the fans who look forward to seeing me play, your support means a lot. I wish the other players a great tournament, looking forward to returning to compete with everyone soon. " ATP Finals 2025 will kick off today, November 9 in Turin, Italy. Musetti shares a group with Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur. The remaining group includes defending champion Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Ben Shelton and Auger-Aliassime. The top two players in each group will advance to the semi-finals. The final will take place on November 16. The tournament champion will receive $5.07 million if undefeated. Previously, each person received 331,000 USD in participation fees, 396,500 USD for each group stage victory, 1.18 million USD for winning in the semi-finals and 2.37 million USD for winning in the final.
