0-for-11 to a sure hit! Hayes regained his confidence in three-pointers and publicly "asked for help" to the Lakers coaching staff
Jackson Hayes hit his first three-pointer of the season and his only three-point attempt so far this season in the Los Angeles Lakers' 130-120 victory over the Miami Heat on Monday. At that time, Hayes was standing at the top of the arc, took a pass from Austin Reeves, and calmly shot the ball in. Since joining the Lakers two seasons ago, Jackson Hayes has not been known as a three-point shooter. Since 2023, he has only taken 12 three-pointers in total, and before this season, his three-point data was an embarrassing 0-for-11. But that wasn't always the case. After the win over the Heat, Hayes was quick to point out that he had taken more three-pointers earlier in his NBA career and that he hopes to increase his three-point attempts with the Lakers. "I feel very comfortable taking that shot. When I was with the New Orleans Pelicans, I played the four position and we made the playoffs, I was averaging about two shots a game," Hayes said. "That was a good rhythm shot. I practice that kind of shot a lot, so I took it. " In the 2021-22 season, which is the third year of Hayes' NBA career with the New Orleans Pelicans, he took 57 three-pointers and made 20 of them, with a shooting percentage of 35.1%. The Pelicans made the playoffs that year, with Hayes starting in all six playoff games. The previous season, Hayes had the best three-point shooting percentage of his career-42.9%. However, he only took 14 three-pointers that year and made 6 of them. By the 2022-23 season, Hayes attempted 29 long-range shots but only hit 3 goals. However, since Hayes joined the Lakers, he has been mainly used as an "alley-oop" threat, especially after partnering with Luka Doncic, the two formed a solid pick-and-roll cooperation. But if the game against the Heat was any indication, it's that Hayes is ready and capable of knocking down 3-pointers when needed. The Lakers have been plagued by injuries this season, and Hayes himself was briefly absent due to a knee injury. But he's now back in the lineup and providing his usual energy off the bench. So far, Hayes has played in 6 games (one of which started), averaging just over 18 minutes per game. He averaged 6.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game and shot 76.2% from the field. Hays was an unrestricted free agent this past offseason, but even after the team experienced a disappointing ending when they were eliminated in the first round of the NBA playoffs, he still chose to re-sign with the Lakers.
